Diesel engines are responsible for nearly half of all nitrogen oxide pollution and two-thirds of all particulate emissions. Yet diesel-powered vehicles are still vital for most types of transport. Luckily, there’s a way to minimise the impact on the environment without having to get rid of your diesel truck.

The answer lies in a Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF), a little device that sits in the exhaust and removes 85 to 98% of all nasty particles. Although DPFs are mandatory in many cases, some fleets opt to remove them because of the high replacement costs. We’re here to tell you it doesn’t have to be that expensive since you don’t have to replace your DPF at all.

How to tell if you need a new DPF

Here are some of the possible signs that your DPF needs looking at:

  • The DPF warning light is on
  • Your vehicle is in limp mode
  • Frequent attempts at DPF regeneration fail
  • A strong smell of diesel
  • Your vehicle is smoking excessively
  • Your oil level is increasing
  • High fuel consumption

Regardless of the symptoms, your DPF nears its end-of-life after around 80,000 miles.

What if you didn’t have to replace your DPF?

There is actually no reason to replace your existing DPF. Through services such as the DPF Cleaning Centre, you can have your DPF cleaned for a fraction of the price of a new one. Basically, you are recycling your DPF.

The DPF Centre’s FH2 Cleaning Machine can clean any make and configuration of DPF without the need of cutting, modifying or welding. It does this simply by connecting the appropriate adapter.

How does the cleaning work?

First, the DPF is removed from the vehicle. Second, the flow rate is tested. Third, the machine pumps high-pressure (recycled) water mixed with Hydro Carbon fluid at a rate of 160 litres through the DPF, assisted with blasts of air at 4 bar. This completely removes soot and ash from the filter. The process is repeated both ways to ensure the filter is entirely clean.

The result is a DPF in near-original condition, virtually 100% clean and ready for another life.

“There are other DPF solutions on the market but none with the success rate of our FH2 machine. You need to take into account the checkout cost, the long-term effectiveness and the guarantees offered.” Tim McGing, DPF Cleaning Centre
